Chavis Carter Death: Suicide Ruling Does Not End Questions In Case Of Handcuffed Arkansas Man

There is still doubt as to whether Chavis Carter committed suicide. In my mind, I don't like the fact that the trajectory was "slightly down and backward. Only if Mr. Carter were very flexible would
he have put his head into a position that would explain the trajectory. BTW, was the bullet impact on the roof of the police car mentioned anywhere? Where are the diagrams from the M.E.--why do we have to rely on written descriptions of trajectory? One other major fact, of course, is the family's claim that he was left-handed and the medical examiner stating that the wound was to the right temple--an  obvious contradiction.

However, if Mr. Carter had killed himself, it is far sadder than if he had been murdered for it would show that faced with the prospects of possibly losing his college dreams at the hands of drug war mavens who allowed two White men to go while arresting the Black man, Mr. Carter ephemerally lost all hope and took his life perhaps in an endeavor to go to what we can only pray is a better place for unfortunates like him.

However, I still hold hope that Mr. Carter loved his life even with its trials and tribulations and that ending it was the farthest thing from his mind.

One last--in my mind--damning observation is this: the police do not involve themselves in pre-emptive strikes to sway public opinion. It is their nature to state what happened and leave it up to prosecutors to determine culpability. In this case, though, it was so preposterous an explanation that they felt compelled to show feasibility. In the recent Saginaw case, "he had a knife." In the old NYC case where the police used a shotgun on a Mrs. Bumpers, "she had a knife." In the NYC case of Mr. Diallo, "we thought he was reaching for a gun."

People in government who give out badges should not think that an object can bestow on its wearer ethical behavior. They should understand that evil can reside anywhere persons are given near absolute power over the people, and they should implement much-needed controls for there is only so much minorities can tolerate before they band together and take away their pensions and other perks when innocents die on their watch.
