The ever informative Harper's Magazine explains in an essay by Elisa Gabbert why coronavirus may still attempt to infect large numbers of victims from among the youth. The lesson to be learned comes from the influenza virus. I'll quote from p13 of the June edition [Readings: Sick Sad World]. A 2020 study, for example, found that people became more sociable in the forty-eight hours after exposure to the flu virus, a period in which one is contagious but asymptomatic. The infected hosts, researchers noted, were significantly more likely to head out to bars and parties.  Before you consider this coincidental, the article mentions other zombie-like viral takeovers of our brains. Most of us are familiar with toxoplasmosis which increases risk taking and rabies which makes its victims avoid water apparently because water would dilute the concentration of virus. So, what explains the high number of infections in hair salons? If you'd been following my posts, you'd know that it's a combination of two things. One, the salon is kept cold because they are using hair dryers and it cries out for air conditioning. Two, the coronavirus sticks to hair judging by the relative electrostatic properties: hair tends to be more positive while the virus is neutral or negative. Opposites attract and when that hair dryer goes off, the virus goes for a ride to its next victim. I guess you could add the talkative nature of the hairstylists but I'm only guessing at this. Perhaps a summary is in order. When the air is cold, the virus floats better because its density is less than that of cold air--the colder the air, the better it floats. We've encountered another niche that the virus loves: meat packers. These poor workers are really at the mercy of the coronavirus. You see, she has never been a germaphobe and that means her immune system is tip top. When you're not a germaphobe, you subject yourself to all manner of germs that immunize you against similar organisms. My German mother-in-law cleans her home meticulously but she has no compunction with sticking her hands into the sewer and unclogging it by hand. "But Midge, I have a snake for that. Ah, what's the big deal, she says to me." Never argue with your mother-in-law. When your mother tells you to wash your hands before supper, is she doing you a disfavor? I think so. In countries with many parasites or in our present pandemic, you want to wash them off your hands but, if not, you want lots and lots of germs to keep your immune system on guard. This brings me to the factoid that Women are less likely to get or die from Covid. Duh, obviously, who subject themselves to more germs as a parent? The one who plays in the parlor with the kids or the one who cleans their diaper...

Half the solution is already inplace. Remember those masks that drop when the airplane is in trouble? Drop them from the start and pump in air (from outside the plane preferred). If the cost is too much, add it to the fare and passengers can just "bring their own" next time they fly. A filtered exhalation port would need to be added to the mask. Meals can be distributed with social distancing in mind; perhaps seats can be color-coded so that, for instance, no reds are together. The "reds" would get their meals first while those in other colors would have to wait for them to finish. Drinks would be had at any time through a one-way straw that can be inserted through the mask and into your mouth as needed. Speaking of masks, I'd like to see Governor Cuomo give each of this contact tracers a mask that they are to wear throughout their waking hours while not at home. At the end of a week, the mask will be replaced and sent to a lab to determine the amount of virions...

So, South Korea is doing better than us with their mortality numbers. Today, I discovered that they are far from being an air-conditioned country. That, if you've been following along with my recent blogs, means that people there stand a better chance of not even getting infected--at least during the Summer. See article here. But the problem vis-a-vis my theory that cold dry air aids transmission is that South Korea's Winter is long, cold, and dry (same latitude as North America). Nevertheless, the fact that they eschew air conditioners means that they should keep their numbers down at least during the short, hot, and humid Summer. Korea has an extensive network of transportation and that while most tourism is domestic, 75% of international visitors comes from other Asian countries. All of which points to high transmissibility. Governor Andrew Cuomo who by now we've come to see has trouble putting two and two together, again tries to tell the public (Oh poor, poor, misguided NY public) that population density at the meat packing plants is the reason for the high infectivity here. You couldn't be more wrong, Gov. The workers are wearing masks and they are not that on top of each other because, for God's sake, they are wielding the sharpest knives around. Also, from what I've seen, the workers are in an assembly line. Wherever an infected worker is, he can only spread to the person immediately upstream or downstream of him/her. He can't infect the whole fucking line--if the Governor is right and we put our trust solely on population density. However, if I'm right and cold temperatures are the real reason for the spread, then you can expect that one worker ANYWHERE could infect the entire plant. Let's take a look at the density of coronaviruses and how they act when released into the atmosphere (exclusive of droplets for I'm not a physicist and I don't know how to calculate that variable). The density of coronaviruses is about 1.225 kg/m³. So, we need to get to an area where the density is lower than that because then the virus will sink--hopefully, like a lead balloon. First, you need to calculate the air pressure at a certain altitude.  (go  here ) Once you have a number for air pressure at your chosen altitude, you then go  here  to calculate the density of air and you want to see a number that is less than 1.225 kg/m³ which is the density of coronaviruses. I found these numbers. A pressure of 13.88 psi would be found at 1500 feet above sea level at a temperature of 32°F. The air temperature was left cold at 32°. Relative humidity was set at 50%. Mrs. Brennan asked an epidemiologist if there was any evidence that masks worked in stopping the coronavirus spread. What an absurd question to ask in a pandemic considering all we know. For instance, we know that social distancing works and we all try to obey the 6 foot rule. Now, if a barrier consisting of nothing but air is effective, how can anyone in their right mind question the effectiveness of a more physical barrier like a mask? In the same breath, the Governor talked about high "density" and meat packers. Sorry, Governor, in a meat packing plant you could have two workers at opposite ends of the building and one of them will catch coronavirus from the other just by virtue of the fact that the entire workplace is a refrigerator and coronaviruses love a dry martini--they don't care so much about the temperature but humidity must be kept to a minimum if the virus is to spread well. Because they wear masks and face shields. The shutdown was never really needed. All government needed to do was insist on masks in public. The 6 foot requirement was bull. The stay-at-home was bull. Sure, they would work but it has been a pyrrhic victory when all we had to do was insist on masks. The one thing that has not been done was the sterilization of areas like handrails and doorknobs. We can eschew shaking hands for the sake of covid-19 mitigation short term but, as a biologist, I think we have evolved to inoculate ourselves with low doses of pathogens obtained through close human contact. This is essential to our survival AS A SPECIES. If you take a human and, at birth, put him in a bubble and give him sterilized food, that person will die within days if not hours when exposed to a normal environment.
