South Korea's Numbers: Was it Really the Testing?

So, South Korea is doing better than us with their mortality numbers. Today, I discovered that they are far from being an air-conditioned country. That, if you've been following along with my recent blogs, means that people there stand a better chance of not even getting infected--at least during the Summer.

See article here.

But the problem vis-a-vis my theory that cold dry air aids transmission is that South Korea's Winter is long, cold, and dry (same latitude as North America). Nevertheless, the fact that they eschew air conditioners means that they should keep their numbers down at least during the short, hot, and humid Summer. During the last year, only July and August saw temperatures above 60⁰ F. (see below). Also troublesome is that S. Korea has an extensive network of transportation and that while most tourism is domestic, 75% of international visitors comes from other Asian countries. All of which points to high transmissibility. Yet, the numbers are low.

South Korea would be a problem for my theory if it weren't for masks; these have been distributed to all by the government and the people abide by their use. Here, we just worry about MD's not having PPE's. Distributing masks might just be better than a quickie vaccine that, like influenza vaccines, might or might not work across the seasons.

CNN had reported that it was probably due to early testing. If you ask me, it was the low numbers to begin with, that allowed for the success of early testing or we can thank their extensive use of masks.

Media Notes:

Anthony Fauci puts the kibosh on College openings in the the Fall (CNN reports) by saying a vaccine is unlikely by then. "When you only have a hammer," you can't conceive of ordering colleges to videotape all their lectures and put them online. What? Will the high cost of College then be untenable? I sincerely hope that the good doctor has no vested interest in vaccine development. Has Bill Gates been visiting with the doctor too often for comfort to conspiratorialists.

Kudos to Governor Cuomo for making New York State Covid data readily available to the public.

Elon Musk picked on Robert Reich--FU, Elon Musk.

In hearing Senator Mike Braun from Indiana, I heard Jake Tapper's voice; Tapper must be from Indiana or they both must have enlarged adenoids, or something, idk.

This week, Dr. Sanjay Gupta wins the coronavirus apparel prize for his tie:
