Why Trump should not be Feared by #BernieOrBust supporters (worst case scenario).
I recently signed the #BernieOrBust pledge on Facebook in which I pledged to write in Bernie Sanders' name or vote for the Green Party candidate (hopefully, they are one and the same).
However, I fail to see the hysteria over a Trump presidential win. If Bernie were not part of the Green Party and was not running as an independent, I would seriously consider Trump. These are my reasons: first, we have a system of checks and balances aimed at stopping despots; secondly, Trump is not hawkish, admires Putin, and wants a better deal with China; thirdly, Mexicans will still make it over the border--no matter what wall is put up; finally, with regard to Muslims, immigration has had quotas ever since people started coming here in droves. I will address these in more detail in the following.
Our constitution has been perverted but it has always been with a wink from the other members of government. If Trump tries to implement an Executive Order that is abhorrent to our way of life, Congress in empowered to pass laws to nip those EO's in the bud. Many, seeing what Clinton, Bush, and Obama have done, now fear that Trump will get away with doing crazy things. If you have any faith in our Constitution, you must see that Trump excesses will not happen unless the majority of us look the other way.
Trump has stated that he admires Putin. I think it's time we respected the Russians. Let's stop doing what we did after Reagan said, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall," and they did under a gentleman's agreement that NATO not make inroads into E. Germany. We went back on our promises saying that the agreement wasn't in writing (Chomsky, 2016). With China, Mr. Trump--working alone--may not be the ultimate wheeler-dealer but as President, he will have a contingent of very smart people who will do everything they can to maximize Chinese agreements on our behalf.
Immigration is a thorny problem. On the one hand, you need to deal with xenophobes and other U.S. citizens who feel cheated out of jobs. It's a problem but not one that a wall would cure. The reason is that, let's face it, who wants to pick lettuce under a blistering Sun? I ran a small landscaping business in NJ. I was driven out of business because while I paid myself and my sons minimum wages, others employed undocumented workers for cheaper wages. You may think that I would welcome a immigration solutions that keep low-wage workers out of our country but the truth is that customers were so used to paying so little for landscaping that I'm sure Monsanto would come in and invent slow growing grass in order to save money. With that, would come a greater loss of jobs.
The wall would appease many Trump supporters and then deportation would probably rear it's ugly head under Trump but soon $10 for a head of lettuce and who knows how much for a night out of dining will have us issuing worker permits pronto. As for Clinton, she is not all that averse to deportation and would continue Obama's policies--so, how much worse is Trump, really?
Immigration quotas have been a mainstay of our country for decades. Many countries don't even have a modicum of allowed emigration to the U.S. So, what's the problem with Muslims? The problem is that Trump targeted a religion when he should have targeted countries. I say should have because we are under attack--that can't be argued against. But even with Muslim nations, I can see Trump, the businessman A) staying out of the Middle East and B) increasing immigration quotas after their hatred of America lessens. Let's face it, people to people conflicts are not the usual problem; rather, it is government to government that's at fault and that only so because of the lack of transparency with what the chess players are doing in our name. Will Trump be more transparent and, even if he will be, can we trust what he says? Those questions are more for the heart than the head--each to his own beliefs, I guess, but although he has made numerous business mistakes, Trump, as a liar, issnot in the same league as the corruptress herself, Hillary R. Clinton.
I hope Bernie Sanders does not kow-tow to the DNC. I hope he finds a way of running and independents will finally have their say and not have to worry about having to select the lesser of two evils. I will probably end up adding to this post once the debates start up again with Bernie Sanders up there representing the Green Party while we sit back and say to CNN and other MSM, "Now, let's see how you crunch the numbers."
