The Physics of Market Forces

There was a discussion on Morning Joe about the faith one should have with regard to market forces which I assume involves such things as 'supply and demand,' 'innovation,' 'competition,' 'resource acquisition,' and other such forces the likes of which few of us who are not economists can fully fathom; however, a university education is often fraught with bias. For as much as it embraces all things scientific, it often fails because the educated experts often can't see the forest for the trees. The fellow who was touting the societal benefits of market forces is probably a Libertarian for not even a Republican wants to unleash businesses unfettered into landscapes of their own making. This fellow, a representative of conservatism comes across as haughty but then, you kind of have to be haughty to defend unbridled market forces. He, naturally, does not address any down side to his position, and that led me to write this blog. One can imagine how m...

Why the Census Citizenship Question is Useless

The short answer is that there is no penalty for NOT answering the question. Let's imagine a possible scenario. You have 100 homes each containing a average of 10 people for a total of 1,000 Census questionnaires. The population as far as the Census is concerned, is diverse. As an example, with full compliance, it would consist of 450 citizens and 550 non-citizens. Amongst the latter, there might be 100 Green Card holders, 50 visitors and 400 undocumented residents. In a world in which there are stiff penalties for not answering the Census and we get close to 100% compliance, the president would obtain his numbers to do his schemes. However, are the 400 undocumented residents going to respond? I think you will agree, it's unlikely. Yet we still run the Census periodically as dictated by our Constitution. Now, the solution to all the underreporting is to try to employ statistics. Here is how it could work (I don't work for the Bureau, so I can't be certain but this i...

So, Wait, What's Justice Roberts' Role in the Impeachment?

They call it a trial. The venue is the U.S. Senate. It will be presided by Chief Justice Roberts.  Why is the main counsel for the defence, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell given a judge's role? Strip that turkey of his overabundant plumage! I believe Chief Justice Roberts can be relied upon to be non-partisan, ergo , the impeachment trial "prosecutors" can just ask the justice for those witnesses required for a fair trial. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs to contact the Chief Justice for some pre-trial guidance instead of trying to emasculate gobble-gobble--not that she's not justified, in my book, at least. It will be a win-win; the defence lawyers can ask for the Bidens and the prosecution can ask for Pompeo and Bolton.

Frances Perkins, We Hardly Knew Ya

[From an article appearing in this month's Harper's, "On Courage" by Kevin Baker] She was the first female cabinet member and--good God--did she set the bar high: helped defeat child labor Gave us union rights Established the minimum wage 40 hr work week Overtime laws Worker's compensation Aid to families with dependent children. Wrote most of the Social Security Act ...all this while having to tend to the needs of her bipolar husband and daughter. Eleanor probably floated her name for Labor Secretary to FDR and he understood that the New Deal required Perkins' empathic and indefatigable activism.  The article, however, was also about Elizabeth Warren and how she identifies with this woman. So much so that wherever she speaks, she will use a podium made from aged wood that was found on the Perkins' Homestead and fashioned by three female carpenters who modeled it after a podium Perkins had once used when speaking out against the cond...

Who doesn't Like Bernie?

I don't like Bernie. I wish he had been anything other than a consistently ethical, moral, and empathetic politician. After all, it seems only his corporate-loving antithesis ever gets the African-American or Hispanic vote. For Bernie to cement the nomination he would need to be a fraud who switches from a Biden type into one who actually gives a hoot about what Madison called, the "humble sons of obscure and unpropitious fortune." They were, said Madison, equal to the "haughty heirs of distinguished names." I'm in that group; I don't expect to have multiple homes; I don't expect to ever buy a yacht or even Super Bowl tickets. Do I hope that Bernie would make such things possible? Not absolutely but yes, relatively more possible. He would do it by making sure that the healthcare industry doesn't rob me of everything I own because their members must maintain their status quo (like Biden would because he's married to one of the perpetrators...
